Ingredients in pipe tobacco

Pipe tobacco may be divided into two major groups aromatic and non aromatic pipe tobacco.

  • Aromatic tobaccos have very rich aromas and are usually very sweet/fruity and sometimes even spicy. The aromatic pipe tobacco is also described as Mixture or Cavendish. Mixture consists of a blend of bright and dark tobacco which has a rounded smooth taste. Cavendish is a blend of tobacco that is specially processed to give a sweet, aromatic flavour.
  • Non-aromatic pipe tobacco is often described as Straight Blends. They are normally a blend of tobacco which are non-aromatic and have a natural tobacco aroma when smoked.

Pipe tobacco is aged, cut, sized, cased with flavours, where appropriate, dried, and packaged for consumption. Throughout the process the Quality Assurance professionals check the tobaccos appearance, measure its size and moisture content to guarantee product consistency.

It is not only the aroma which affects the smoking experience. The cut or size of the tobacco also affects how well the tobacco packs into the pipe, how well it stays lit and how fast and hot it burns. A larger leafy cut may burn slow and evenly, but may be difficult to pack and hard to keep lit.
